Portugal transitions to winter time
Portugal is transitioning to winter time during the early hours of Sunday, October 25. In mainland Portugal and Madeira, clocks will be set back one hour from 02:00 to 01:00. In the Azores, the time will shift from 01:00 to 00:00.
This seasonal change follows European Union directives established in 1996, which harmonize time changes across member states. While the European Parliament voted in favor of ending seasonal time changes in 2019, the process remains suspended due to a lack of consensus among member states regarding a permanent fixed time.
Health experts note that while the transition to winter time is generally easier for the body to adapt to than the shift to summer time, the earlier sunset can affect circadian rhythms. Specialists recommend maintaining regular sleep and meal schedules and seeking natural light exposure in the morning to assist with the adjustment.
