Portugal unemployment rate holds at 5.6% in June

Portugal's unemployment rate remained at 5.6% in June 2026, unchanged from May and 0.4 percentage points lower than the same month a year earlier, the lowest level since February 2002. The Institute Nacional de Estatística (INE) reported that the under‑utilisation rate fell to 9.3%, the lowest since the series began in 2011. Employment stood at 5.351,8 thousand persons, a 0.3% decline from May but a 0.7% rise compared with three months earlier. Female unemployment was 6.3%, above the 4.9% recorded for men, whose rate reached its lowest point since February 1998. Adult unemployment was 4.6%, while youth unemployment surged to 18.9% in June. The active population measured 5.668,5 thousand, down 0.2% from May but up 0.3% versus March, and the inactive population increased to 2.411,2 thousand, up 0.8% from May.
