Portugal unemployment registrations drop 9.7% in April, IEFP reports

At the end of April, Portugal's public employment services recorded 283,290 registered unemployed people, representing 66.1% of the total 428,304 job seekers. This marks a 9.7% decrease compared with the same month a year earlier and a 4.2% drop from March.

Job offers received in April totaled 11,919, down 12.3% year‑on‑year and 18.9% below March levels. Unfilled offers stood at 16,458, a 2.2% decline from a year earlier but a 2.6% increase from the previous month. Placements made during the month reached 9,051, lower by 3.2% year‑on‑year and 10.7% compared with March.

Unemployment fell across all regions, with the steepest year‑on‑year declines in the North (‑13.1%), Madeira (‑12.9%) and the Azores (‑12.2%). The Algarve saw the sharpest month‑on‑month fall (‑23.3%). Among the registered unemployed, the largest groups were unskilled workers (29.8%), personal‑service, protection, security and sales staff (19.8%), intellectual and scientific specialists (11%) and administrative personnel (10.4%). Placements were most concentrated among unskilled workers (43.6%), personal‑service and security staff (19.2%) and qualified industry, construction and artisan workers (9.5%).
