Portugal vaccinates 31,000 children against RSV in first month

The Portuguese Directorate-General for Health (DGS) reported that 31,000 children in mainland Portugal have been vaccinated against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) during the first month of the current campaign. The vaccination program, which began on September 16 and runs until March 31, targets children born within specific windows or those with risk factors such as being preterm.

The campaign aims to protect approximately 84,000 eligible children to reduce severe respiratory disease, pediatric hospitalizations, and pressure on healthcare services during peak virus circulation periods. The DGS noted that the high uptake reflects a strong commitment from families and health professionals. The vaccination is provided free of charge.
