Valpaços wildfire scorches over 15,000 hectares in northern Portugal

A wildfire ignited on Tuesday in the municipality of Valpaços, Vila Real district, and quickly spread to the neighbouring municipalities of Mirandela, Vinhais and Macedo de Cavaleiros in Bragança district. The fire has burned more than 15,000 hectares, of which over 10,000 hectares are in Valpaços, destroying vineyards, olive groves, almond orchards and other agricultural land.

The municipal emergency plan was activated and around 900‑1,000 emergency personnel, 300‑317 vehicles and six to eight aerial firefighting units have been deployed. About 20‑21 houses were damaged, four people were temporarily displaced and five individuals suffered minor injuries. Villages were evacuated or confined, and a brief window for aerial operations around 10:20 am was used when weather conditions permitted. The mayor, Jorge Mata Pires, has requested a formal calamity declaration and officials from the interior ministry, civil protection and the prime minister’s office are monitoring the situation. The fire remains active on several fronts, with consolidation and rescaldo operations ongoing in Valpaços while the front in Mirandela and Vinhais continues to be the main concern.
