Valpaços wildfire 15,000 hectares Mirandela evacuations

A wildfire ignited on Tuesday in the parish of Ervões, Valpaços, Vila Real district, Portugal. The blaze quickly spread to the neighboring municipalities of Mirandela, Vinhais and Macedo de Cavaleiros, affecting a total area of roughly 15‑16 000 hectares, of which more than 10 000 hectares burned in Valpaços alone.

Authorities mobilised close to a thousand emergency personnel, about 300 vehicles and eleven aerial units. The municipal emergency plan was activated, villages were evacuated or confined, and a few dozen houses were damaged. Five people suffered light injuries. By the early hours of 1 August the fire was declared dominated at 04:40, although re‑activations continued to be tackled on the Valpaços front.

The fire caused extensive damage to vineyards, olive groves and other crops, threatening the upcoming harvest and olive campaign. Local officials highlighted the priority of protecting people and property, and the national government was kept informed.
