Portugal wildfires consume over 63,000 hectares in 2026

Portugal is facing a severe wildfire season, with 6,666 rural fires recorded between January 1 and August 19, 2026, resulting in 63,347 hectares of burned land. According to the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), controlled burns and other types of burning were the primary cause of fires until mid-August, accounting for 37% of investigated cases, followed by arson at 17%.

Significant active fires have been reported across several regions. In Arouca, a major blaze has consumed approximately 1,300 hectares of forest; while villages are no longer in immediate danger, three volunteer firefighters were seriously injured when their vehicle went off the road. In Santo Tirso, a fire in Rebordões has been brought under control after previously burning 900 hectares. Other active fronts have been reported in Torre de Moncorvo and Boticas.

Environmental experts point to the combination of the El Niño phenomenon and the prevalence of eucalyptus monocultures as major factors increasing the country's vulnerability to rapid and violent fire spread.
