Portugal wine culture highlights regional diversity and evolving trends
Portugal's wine culture is seeing evolving consumption trends, ranging from traditional vintage Port to modern aperitifs like ‘Porto Tónico’ (Port & Tonic). While Port wine historically gained prominence in the 17th century due to British trade shifts, newer styles such as dry white Port are being marketed for lighter consumption.
Beyond the capital of Lisbon, several wine regions offer distinct experiences. South of the city, the Península de Setúbal region, including Palmela, Azeitão, and Setúbal, features historic cellars and varieties such as Castelão, Fernão Pires, and Moscatel. To the north and west, the areas of Bucelas and Colares provide different profiles influenced by their proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The autumn season is particularly notable for the annual grape harvest and vineyard excursions.
