Portugal wine sector faces climate and cost challenges

Enologist Luís Leão discusses the challenges facing the Portuguese wine sector during the current harvest season. He notes that climate change is causing structural shifts, specifically through prolonged droughts and more frequent extreme heatwaves, which accelerate the grapevine vegetative cycle and lead to earlier, faster harvests.

Despite these climatic shifts, no significant production drop is expected compared to 2025. However, Leão emphasizes that rising costs for water, energy, and labor necessitate price increases for wine products to maintain operational margins. He also suggests that the rapid rise in tourism in Portugal may be impacting the sector's traditional economic balance.
