Portugal workplace stress costs economy 13.3 billion euros annually

A report by the Ordem dos Psicólogos estimates that stress and psychological health issues in the Portuguese labor market cost the economy 13.3 billion euros annually. This figure represents approximately 40 days per year for each worker.

The report indicates that burnout is becoming more widespread, noting that the economic impact has quadrupled compared to estimates made four years ago. This trend suggests a growing societal issue regarding work-related exhaustion and mental health.

In response to these challenges, the concept of a four-day work week is being discussed as a potential solution. While a private sector pilot program in 2023 showed positive results for both employees and companies, the current national government has not continued the initiative. However, the regional government in the Azores is considering exploring the model.
