Portugal teen addiction trends show decline in substances but rise in digital risks
A new study by the Institute for Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies (ICAD) in Portugal reveals that while overall consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs is declining among adolescents aged 13 to 18, new risks are emerging. The ECATD-CAD 2024 report indicates a general reduction in problematic situations, including violence, accidents, and hospitalizations, compared to 2019. This positive trend is attributed to factors such as improved academic performance and increased parental supervision.
However, researchers warn of a ‘silent epidemic’ where risks are increasingly concentrated within a small, vulnerable group of youths facing social and familial challenges. For these individuals, problematic behaviors are intensifying. While substance abuse remains a primary concern, there is a significant rise in non-substance addictions. Specifically, girls show higher rates of problematic social media use, while boys are more frequently involved in risky behaviors related to video games and online gambling.
