Portugal's 2026 Festival Closures Blend International Fireworks Wins and Rock in Rio Flop

The Festival do Atlântico concluded with a spectacular closing show titled “Gerações,” featuring fireworks by Portugal’s Macedo’s Pyrotechnics and a coordinated drone display that drew thousands of spectators. The event also announced the winners of the Madeira International Fireworks Competition, with China’s Nanchang Fireworks Industries Co. taking the jury‑selected Atlantic Trophy, Ukraine’s Dance of Fire receiving the public‑chosen Madeira Trophy, and Canada’s Firemaster Productions opening the contest. Regional tourism officials highlighted the festival’s role in showcasing Madeira’s capacity to host high‑profile international events.

In the same year, the Rock in Rio edition in Lisbon ended on a subdued note. Attendance fell to an estimated 40‑50 thousand, about half capacity, amid criticism of ticket prices and a mixed lineup. Headliner 21 Savage arrived late, performed briefly and left the stage early, prompting reports that he may not have even taken the stage. Organisers noted the festival’s intention to return in 2028 after a disappointing finale.
