Portugal's Alentejo Advances Renewable Energy Projects

The Portuguese government has opened a public consultation on the Sectorial Programme for Accelerating Renewable Energy Zones (PSZAER). The consultation runs from 17 June to 15 July 2026, allowing citizens and interested entities to submit comments via the online portal Participa.

At the same time, Chint Solar is seeking approval for a three‑site hybrid solar‑wind cluster in the Alentejo municipalities of Portel and Vidigueira. The proposal, called “Cluster Alqueva – Portel,” includes two solar‑photovoltaic plants combined with wind farms and a third standalone solar plant, together totalling 895 MW of installed capacity and equipped with battery storage. The projects would install about 2.16 million PV modules over 2 616 ha, generate roughly 1 868 GWh annually, and require an estimated €13.5 million for licensing plus €122 million for grid‑connection infrastructure. The proposal is also under public consultation until 3 July 2026. Both initiatives aim to boost Portugal’s clean‑energy production and align with national and EU climate objectives.
