Portugal's Alentejo Region Gets New Wastewater Treatment Plants

Portugal's Environment Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho inaugurated two new wastewater‑treatment stations in the Alentejo towns of Cuba and Montemor‑o‑Novo. The projects, costing about €5.7 million in total, replace facilities over 30 years old and aim to improve sanitation services for local residents.

The Cuba plant, serving roughly 4,900 inhabitants, was built for €3.6 million, with 57.7 % of funding coming from the EU COMPETE 2020/REACT‑EU programme, and includes a 75‑megawatt photovoltaic unit expected to cut grid electricity consumption by about 40 %. The Montemor‑o‑Novo station, serving about 900 people, cost €2.1 million, 83.5 % of which was financed by the Alentejo 2030 programme. Both stations are managed by Águas Públicas do Alentejo (AgdA), which provides water supply and wastewater services to more than 228 000 residents across dozens of municipalities in the region.
