Portugal's Algarve Health Service faces union concerns over possible private management

The Portuguese Nurses Union (SEP) warned that the Algarve Local Health Unit (ULS Algarve) could be transferred to private management, urging the government to clarify its intentions. Union leader Guadalupe Simões cited statements by the health minister and the president of the Union of Portuguese Charities indicating openness to a private partnership involving groups such as CUF, Luz and Lusíadas. She expressed fears that a shift to private control could alter employment contracts, working conditions and primary‑care services for nurses and other health professionals.

Separately, the municipality of Albufeira has provided a two‑bed apartment to accommodate doctors who work temporary shifts at the local Basic Emergency Service (SUB). The agreement, signed with ULS Algarve, aims to ease housing difficulties and high hotel costs that have hindered recruitment of external medical staff, allowing doctors to stay on‑site while serving the community.
