Portugal's August Eclipse and Festival Season Highlights

On August 12, Portugal will experience a near‑total solar eclipse, with the Sun obscured between 92 % and almost 100 % across most of the country. A narrow strip in the Montesinho Natural Park in Bragança will see daylight turn to night for a few seconds. The following night, the Perseids meteor shower peaks under a new‑moon sky, offering one of the best viewing opportunities in years.

The month also features a packed cultural calendar. The Vodafone Paredes de Coura music festival runs from August 12‑15, drawing international and Portuguese acts to the riverside venue. Other notable events include the Sardine Festival in Portimão (August 4‑9), the Medieval Fair in Silves (August 7‑15), and the long‑running FATACIL fair in Lagoa (August 21‑30). August 15 marks the Assumption of Our Lady holiday, a traditional religious celebration with processions and local festivities throughout Portugal.
