Portugal's Barreta beach and Alentejo river spots draw summer visitors

Barreta Beach on the island of Ilha da Barreta in the Algarve remains one of Portugal's least crowded seaside locations. Accessible only by a ferry or shuttle from Faro’s Cais das Portas do Mar, the beach offers a 11‑kilometre stretch of sand, warm summer water averaging 20 °C‑24 °C, and a natural, undeveloped environment praised by local officials.

In the Alentejo region, a network of river beaches provides an alternative to the heat of the inland plains. Highlights include the 320‑metre Praia Fluvial de Mourão, the Blue‑Flag Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz with child‑friendly pools, and the fully equipped Praia Fluvial da Tapada Grande near Mértola. These sites feature lifeguard services, parking, picnic areas, and accessibility provisions, with the swimming season running from early June to mid‑September.
