Portugal's Campo Maior and Castro Marim festivals attract over 400,000 visitors in August

The Festas do Povo in Campo Maior will run from 8 to 16 August, with organisers expecting more than 400,000 visitors and a budget close to €2 million. The UNESCO‑listed intangible heritage event features over 4,000 volunteers creating about 50 tonnes of hand‑made paper flowers to decorate more than 100 streets. Daily tickets cost €8 in advance (€10 later) and a nine‑day pass is €15.

In the Algarve, the medieval reenactment in Castro Marim takes place from 26 to 30 August. The historic centre will host live craft demonstrations, exhibitions of torture instruments and a replica of the Order of Christ’s first headquarters. Thirty national and international groups, including participants from Italy, Spain, Morocco and France, will perform. Tickets are €5 for children (6‑11 years) and €8 for adults, with a five‑day pass priced at €8 (children) and €16 (adults). The event also features an Arab camp recreating a 17th‑century salt‑spice caravan.
