Portugal's Casa Para Viver delivers open letter condemning rental law overhaul

The housing advocacy platform Casa Para Viver, a coalition of about one hundred associations and collectives, will present an open letter to Housing Minister Miguel Pinto Luz at the government headquarters in Lisbon on Thursday at 18:45. The letter criticises the recent amendment to the New Urban Rental Regime (NRAU) approved by the Council of Ministers on 9 July, arguing it will “explode housing precariousness”.

The platform denounces measures that would simplify and speed up evictions after two months of rent arrears, remove the 2 % cap on rent increases and favour speculative investment, claiming they hurt the most vulnerable tenants. The delivery will be supported by the Porta a Porta – Casa para Todos movement during the National Week of Fight for the Right to Housing, which is taking place in six Portuguese cities.

Casa Para Viver calls on the Assembly of the Republic to reverse the government’s package and urges Minister Pinto Luz to meet with the protestors.
