Portugal’s Douro Heritage Train Celebrates 25 Years of UNESCO World‑Heritage Listing
A special historic train ran along the Douro line to mark the 25th anniversary of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro’s UNESCO World‑Heritage designation. More than a hundred guests attended, including regional officials, local mayors, business leaders, academics and community representatives.
The event was used to discuss the long‑term challenges and opportunities for the Douro territory. CCDR Norte President Álvaro Santos stressed the need to attract investment, foster innovation and retain population, while Secretary of State Silvério Regalado highlighted that heritage must stay “alive” through sustainable economic activity. The programme, called “Douro 2050 – Living Heritage, Sustainable Future,” was launched in partnership with the Liga dos Amigos do Douro Património Mundial and the Intermunicipal Community of Douro.
