Portugal's Douro Wine Sector Receives New Government Plan and Enotourism Program

The Institute of Douro and Port Wines (IVDP) delivered an executive plan for the sustainable management and valorisation of the Douro Demarcated Region to the Portuguese government. The 2026‑2032 proposal seeks to correct structural imbalances, raise viticulturists’ income and improve economic, social, environmental and landscape sustainability. Key measures include defining reference production costs for the three sub‑regions, introducing written grape‑to‑wine contracts from 2027, creating an Environmental Sustainability and Landscape Valuation Tax, launching a multi‑year promotion and internationalisation programme, strengthening enotourism, supporting small and medium producers with credit lines and temporary aid, modernising cooperatives, limiting vineyard expansion and encouraging voluntary production adjustments.

Separately, the Quinta da Vacaria estate announced an immersive enotourism experience called “Ganhar a Meia‑Noite” running from September to mid‑October. Small groups (4‑12 people) can reserve a €180 package that includes transport in a classic vehicle, a guided cellar visit, tasting of five house wines, a themed regional dinner, and participation in the traditional foot‑stomping of grapes, all aimed at showcasing the cultural heritage of the Douro harvest season.
