Portugal's elderly care homes face fire tragedy and legal battles over relocations

A nursing home in Mirandela, known locally as the "Hospitel," suffered a deadly fire on the night of 16 August 2025. The blaze, suspected to have started from a short‑circuit in an anti‑bedsore mattress, killed six residents aged 75 to 95 and injured 25 others. Alarms failed to sound, according to a neighbor. After extensive refurbishment, the facility is slated to reopen next week for about 80 elderly residents, while investigations by the Public Ministry and the Institute of Social Security remain ongoing.

Separately, a Portuguese court has blocked the demolition of the Outeiro do Linhó social‑housing complex in Valongo. The ruling prevents the forced relocation of elderly occupants, who had been told to move into containers or other temporary accommodation. The decision allows the seniors to remain in their homes pending further resolution.
