Portugal's General Strike Over Labor Reform Halts Transport and Services

A nationwide general strike was called in Portugal on the eve of a public holiday to protest the government's proposed labor reform, known as "Trabalho XXI." The strike, organized by the CGTP federation and not supported by the rival UGT, led to empty streets, suspended public transport and reduced public services.

The reform, which includes changes to overtime, sub‑contracting and the status of platform‑based workers, has been criticised as constitutionally regressive. Trade unions argue the measures threaten workers' rights, while the government claims they align with EU standards. Economic data show the strike cut the country's Economic Activity Index by about 8%, highlighting its immediate impact on the Portuguese economy.

The episode follows a decline in union membership over recent decades and reflects broader tensions over labor policy and political influence within Portugal's left‑wing parties.
