Portugal GNR reports surge in animal abandonment during summer holidays
The Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR) warned that animal abandonment spikes during the summer vacation period, accounting for almost 40% of all abandonment cases. Between 2024 and the first half of 2026, the force recorded more than 2,400 crimes against companion animals, including 312 cases of mistreatment and 159 abandonments in the most recent six‑month window, and detained 28 suspects. July and August together saw 142 incidents (38.1% of the annual total), with the districts of Braga, Setúbal, Porto and Lisbon reporting the highest rates, reflecting population density and holiday travel. The GNR emphasized that abandonment is a criminal offense and urged owners to adopt responsibly, highlighting safe alternatives such as temporary boarding facilities or family support. The agency’s data show a slight downward trend in abandonment registrations, but the seasonal surge remains a concern for animal welfare authorities.
