Portugal's GNR reports July traffic detentions and tire safety warnings

From 13 to 19 July the Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR) carried out nationwide traffic operations, detaining 37 people for offences such as driving under the influence, driving without a licence, domestic violence and other serious crimes. The force recorded 383 traffic violations, including speeding, mobile‑phone use while driving, seat‑belt failures and vehicle‑weight excesses, and documented 90 road accidents that left three people seriously injured and 30 with minor injuries. In addition, GNR data show that 8,557 tyre‑related infractions were identified for 2025 and 4,187 more up to 15 June 2026, with 889 vehicles involved in tyre‑related crashes in 2025 and 576 by mid‑2026. The Guard urges drivers to inspect tyre pressure, tread depth and overall condition before and during summer trips to reduce accident risk.
