Portugal's gov.pt app adds digital medical disability certificates

The Portuguese government application, gov.pt, has introduced a new feature allowing users to store the Multipurpose Medical Certificate of Disability (AMIM) directly in its digital wallet. This update enables citizens to present the document digitally, providing the same legal validity as the physical paper version.

The AMIM certifies a person's degree of physical or mental disability, whether temporary or permanent. It is essential for accessing various social, fiscal, and economic benefits based on the National Table of Disabilities. The digital version is particularly useful for individuals with a disability degree of 60% or higher, as the document is frequently required by entities such as the Tax Authority and Social Security.

To add the certificate, users must open the gov.pt app, navigate to the Wallet section, select 'Add document', and follow the on-screen instructions for the AMIM. Note that this functionality currently only applies to certificates issued from mid-2022 onwards, as older documents are not available in a digital format.
