Portugal's IRN to Offer Minimal Services on General Strike Day

On Wednesday, June 3, the Instituto dos Registos e Notariado (IRN) will keep only minimal in‑person services operational as a nationwide general strike takes place in Portugal. The Ministry of Justice says the strike could cause “constrictions” at civil registries and Citizen Shops, so the IRN will attend urgent matters such as civil marriages in case of death or imminent birth, already‑scheduled marriages, urgent testaments, and the issuance of emergency citizen cards and passports.

Citizens can obtain these documents at designated identification departments in Lisbon, Porto, and several civil registry offices across the country, while all digital services – including online renewals, certificates and company registration – remain fully available. The strike follows the CGTP’s pre‑notice against recent changes to the labour law after negotiations with the government ended without agreement; the government has nevertheless approved a revision proposal that will be debated in parliament and expects broad participation from public‑sector unions, health, education, transport, aviation and commerce.
