Portugal's June 3 General Strike Targets Government Labor Reform

A nationwide general strike is set for 3 June in Portugal after the inter‑union confederation CGTP‑IN called for a shutdown to oppose the government's proposed labor package. The strike, the 12th since 1974, aims to block changes the government plans to approve in parliament, which unions say will increase precarious work, extend banked hours and undermine collective bargaining.

The protest has drawn participation from dozens of sectors. Transport unions (FECTRANS) have mobilised workers from Lisbon Metro, Carris, CP‑Comboios, and other operators, while aviation unions warn of disruptions to around 500 flights. Health workers, including doctors and nurses, and teachers have also joined, with municipal employees expected to strike as well. The major union UGT has so far abstained. Political parties across the spectrum, from the Socialists to Chega, have criticised the reform.

In Vila Verde, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) intensified local mobilisation, reaching out to hospital staff, textile and manufacturing workers, and municipal employees, warning that the June 3 strike will be a decisive moment to halt the labour package.
