Portugal's Labor Reform Bill Faces Opposition as Socialists Vow to Vote Against It

Portugal's government has introduced a package of changes to the Labor Law aimed at increasing flexibility, reducing bureaucracy and boosting competitiveness. Socialists' secretary‑general José Luís Carneiro said the party will vote against the proposals in the plenary, calling them a "counter‑reform" that would undermine workers' rights, family life and maternity protection, and risk expanding informal employment.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, speaking at the Douro Wine Festival, argued that citizens and businesses support the reforms, stressing the need for a more dynamic labour market and greater productivity while respecting workers' rights. He reiterated the government's confidence that the changes will benefit the country and urged the opposition to allow the legislation to proceed.

The two parties have signaled they will oppose the bill when it is put to a vote in parliament, setting up a likely parliamentary showdown over the labour reforms.
