Portugal's Left Bloc Calls for Nationwide Price Controls

Bloco de Esquerda coordinator José Manuel Pureza urged the Portuguese government to impose price controls on essential goods and services across the country. Speaking in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island after visiting the Solidariedad’Arte eco‑solidarity shop, he said such measures would alleviate the cost‑of‑living crisis affecting the majority of the population. Pureza highlighted rising expenses for fuel, housing, loans, medication and health services, arguing that strong public services and state‑led solidarity are needed. He contrasted the “overwhelming majority” of workers and pensioners who struggle with low wages and pensions against a small elite that profits enormously from sectors such as fuel, retail and real estate. The proposal references price‑control practices already applied in the Azores and calls for them to be extended nationwide. The call reflects growing public discontent over household expenses and adds pressure on the national debate about how to address the crisis.
