Portugal's left parties mobilize against government labor reforms and Lajes base

Portugal's Communist Party (PCP) secretary‑general Paulo Raimundo denounced the government's new labour package, accusing it of allowing dismissals without cause and rolling back maternity and paternity rights. He said the proposal had already been rejected in previous protests and called for a general strike on 3 June, urging workers to defend “respect, dignity, rights, time to live, better conditions and better wages.”

The left‑wing Bloco de Esquerda announced that it will table a parliamentary commission of inquiry to examine the use of the Base das Lajes airfield in the Azores. Coordinator José Manuel Pureza said the inquiry will assess the consistency of the government's statements with those of foreign officials such as Marco Rubio and Portuguese foreign minister Paulo Rangel.
