Portugal and Spain urged to exclude Morocco from 2030 World Cup co‑hosting

Following a deadly migration surge in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where roughly 70,000 migrants crossed the border and about 100 people died, Portuguese green party LIVRE and the Spanish parliamentary group Sumar have called for a reassessment of Morocco’s role as a co‑host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. LIVRE addressed a letter to Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and the Portuguese Football Federation, arguing that “a country that violates international law and uses vulnerable people as a tool of political pressure does not have the conditions to be a partner in an organization that relies on cooperation, trust and free movement.”

The groups also urged FIFA, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Portuguese government to conduct a specific review of the joint‑hosting model, citing Morocco’s record of human‑rights violations, including the repression of the Sahrawi people. They request an independent public assessment of human‑rights risks for host nations and propose that Spain refrain from co‑organising the tournament with Morocco until such concerns are addressed.
