Portugal's Ministry of Justice appoints 47 new registry officials

On 3 August 2026, the Ministry of Justice in Portugal placed 47 newly qualified conservators of registration into service, primarily at the Central Registry of Registries and the Central Archive of Porto. All appointees hold law degrees, average 40 years of age, and 90 % are women; they completed a year of theoretical and practical training within the conservatories.

The hiring aims to strengthen the Institute of Registries and Notary (IRN) after two decades of under‑investment and to address an ageing workforce—63 % of IRN staff were 55 years or older in 2025. The new staff will improve processing of nationality applications and work across property, commercial, civil and vehicle registers. A further 66 conservators are scheduled to start in September, bringing the total new hires for the year to 113. Additional recruitment plans include 39 new positions authorized for October 2025, 120 officials who joined in May–June 2025, and the imminent completion of a recruitment drive for 485 officials slated for the last quarter of 2026.
