Portugal's Municipal and Regional Development Plans Face Public Consultation and Political Scrutiny

The municipality of Proença‑a‑Nova has opened a 20‑day public consultation on its Strategic Urban Rehabilitation Programme (PERU), which covers 40 villages and proposes measures to improve infrastructure, preserve heritage and stimulate revitalisation.

At the same time, the centre‑right PSD party has demanded parliamentary hearings with the head of the Alentejo Regional Development Commission and officials of the Alentejo 2030 programme to clarify a proposed re‑programming of European Union funds. The party says 27 municipalities fear cuts to priority sectors such as health, education, social equipment and urban regeneration, part of a €440.9 million regional development plan.

Both initiatives highlight growing local involvement and political debate over the allocation and management of territorial development funds in Portugal.
