Portugal's Parliament rejects plan to boost video surveillance

Portugal's Public Security Police (PSP) and National Republican Guard (GNR) formed a working group that recommended expanding interior video‑surveillance in both buildings of the Assembly of the Republic. The plan included installing cameras near the elevators of the new parliamentary block adjacent to the Jardim da Praça da Constituição.

All parliamentary parties rejected the proposal, arguing that additional cameras would infringe on deputies' privacy and freedom of movement, potentially limiting open discussion with colleagues, journalists and visitors. The refusal follows a claim by Chega leader André Ventura that his office was recently broken into and documents related to Interior Minister Luís Neves were taken.
