Portugal's PCP chief urges PM Montenegro to scrap labour reform

PCP secretary‑general Paulo Raimundo called on Prime Minister Luís Montenegro to announce the withdrawal of the government's labour reform package at the upcoming bi‑weekly parliamentary debate, saying it would be "a great service to the country". Raimundo argued that the only parties backing the reform are the government, the centre‑right Iniciativa Liberal, CDS‑PP and Chega, and criticised their policy as harmful to micro, small and medium‑size enterprises.

He reminded that Montenegro and Chega leader André Ventura had previously agreed to advance a Single Social Benefit proposal without a vote, and warned that a similar move on the labour package would be a "coup" for which those responsible would be liable. Raimundo also noted the prolonged vacancy of the Justice Ombudsman post and the difficulties faced by businesses due to the Middle‑East conflict, pledging new parliamentary initiatives to support SMEs.
