Portugal's PCP denounces government for rushed labor reform debate

PCP secretary‑general Paulo Raimundo said the Portuguese government scheduled the debate on the labour reform for 18 June "à má fila", indicating fear and haste. He warned the administration of possible "institutional coups" and pledged the party will monitor any manoeuvres. Raimundo argued the reform will be defeated by continued workers’ struggle and criticised the Chega party for its inconsistent stance. He also criticised the government's approach to fiscal fraud, health‑system staffing, and the proposed single social benefit, calling for a thorough and truthful discussion.

The remarks were made during a visit to the Lisbon Book Fair, with Raimundo accusing the government of confusing a temporary institutional majority with a social majority and urging stronger public hospital staffing to address systemic health‑service issues.
