Portugal’s Peneda and Piódão river beaches receive Blue Flag and accessibility awards

The Praia Fluvial da Peneda in Góis reinstated its Blue Flag and ‘Praia Acessível – Praia para Todos’ certifications after municipal repairs corrected damage caused by early‑year storms. The work restored water quality, safety measures, services and accessibility, allowing the beach to reopen for the 2026 season. Municipal President Rui Sampaio praised the effort, noting the awards recognise the beach’s high environmental and inclusive standards.

The Praia Fluvial do Piódão in the Serra do Açor also carries the Blue Flag and a Golden Quality seal from Quercus. Built around a small shale dam on the Alva tributary, the beach offers clear, cold water, lifeguard patrols, sanitation facilities, a bar and a children’s area. It features ColorADD signage to aid colour‑blind visitors, a rare accessibility addition for Portuguese river beaches. The beach complements the historic village of Piódão, drawing tourists to both the natural and cultural attractions of the area.
