Portugal's political leaders push economic reforms amid parliamentary debates

PS secretary‑general José Luís Carneiro called on the Portuguese government to treat the marine economy as a top priority, arguing that investment in the sector would create sustainable, skilled jobs and support younger generations. Speaking in Madeira, he urged greater autonomy for the sea, better support for fisheries, modernization of vessels and stronger EU negotiations on fishing quotas, pledging to work with the autonomous regions when he becomes prime minister.

PSD parliamentary leader Hugo Soares described the current period as a "moment of turning point" and said the government is only at the beginning of its journey. He highlighted above‑average economic growth, record‑low unemployment and balanced public accounts, while warning against the right‑wing populism of Chega and the "statist" approach of the Socialist Party. Soares stressed the need for legislative "gymnastics" to pass reforms, particularly on labor and retirement age, and emphasised the party’s commitment to moderation and good‑sense politics.
