Portugal's private hospitals revenue hits record €2.79 bn in 2025
Private and public‑partner hospitals in Portugal generated a combined €2.790 billion in revenue in 2025, up 9.5% from the previous year. The growth was driven by higher utilisation of private hospital services and increased penetration of health‑insurance coverage.
Portugal had 242 hospitals in 2024, of which 131 were in the private sector. The for‑profit private segment comprised 64 hospitals with 4,537 beds as of April 2026, averaging 71 beds per facility. The Porto region accounted for 37% of these beds, followed by Lisbon with 32%. The five largest hospital operators controlled 92.2% of the market in 2025.
Health‑insurance premiums also rose, reaching €1.782 billion in 2025, a 12.3% increase year‑on‑year after a 17.5% rise in 2024. The top five insurers captured 82.5% of total premium revenue, indicating a high concentration in the insurance market.
