Portugal's PS Secretary-General Carneiro Accuses Government of Masked Deal with Chega

Portugal's Socialist Party secretary‑general José Luís Carneiro said the government is “taken by inhumanity and insensitivity” and is dancing a “baile de máscaras” with Chega leader André Ventura over a proposed labour package. Speaking to journalists at the West Sea shipyards in Viana do Castelo, Carneiro warned that the agreement would increase precarious employment, lower wages and hurt young people, women and families.

Carneiro highlighted the marine economy of Viana do Castelo as a productive model, citing more than a thousand direct and indirect jobs and the construction of six new dual‑use vessels funded by the national recovery plan. He announced the PS will present a matrix for productivity, competitiveness and training to address the impact of artificial intelligence and digital transition, criticizing the government’s focus on ideological issues such as LGBT rights, nationality and immigration over economic concerns.
