Portugal's Socialist Party urges parliamentary review of driving‑tutor decree

The Portuguese government issued a decree‑law that expands the legal framework for learning to drive, allowing a learner to be taught by a private tutor as an alternative to formal driving‑school lessons. The decree was promulgated on 27 May and signed by President António José Seguro.

Socialist Party deputy Frederico Francisco criticised the measure as “imprudent” and “a step too far”, noting rising road‑traffic fatalities. The PS called for a parliamentary debate and broader public consultation with bodies such as the Institute for Mobility and Transport (IMT), the National Road Safety Authority and driving‑school associations, seeking amendments that would set clearer conditions and safeguards for tutor‑based instruction.
