Portugal solar power tops electricity mix in July 2026

In July 2026, solar photovoltaic generation supplied 19 % of Portugal’s electricity consumption, becoming the country’s leading single source for the first time. Renewable sources together covered 53 % of demand, with hydroelectric at 16 %, wind at 13 % and biomass at 5 %. Non‑renewable generation provided 13 % and imports accounted for the remaining 34 %.

The monthly productivity index recorded by Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN) was 0.89 for solar, 1.26 for hydro and 0.71 for wind. Over the first seven months of 2026, renewables supplied 68 % of total electricity, led by hydro (27 %) and wind (24 %). Natural‑gas generation fell 7.3 % in July, while the Sines LNG terminal met the whole national gas supply, with two‑thirds of imports from Nigeria and the rest from the United States.
