Portugal's wine sector sees high‑tech winery launch and new stock‑declaration fines
The newly opened Adega do Cedro in Peso da Régua, Douro, branded as the “Adega do Futuro”, represents a €27 million investment in digital winemaking. The facility uses tablets and a fully automated system, with chips embedded in each hose to track production steps, and can process about 6 million litres of wine a year while cutting energy use by up to 40 percent.
At the same time, the Portuguese government has introduced a mandatory wine‑stock declaration. From August, producers must file a Declaration of Existence (DE) with the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (IVV) via the SiVV online platform, reporting inventory levels as of 31 July. Failure to comply attracts fines of €250‑€5 000 for individual producers and up to €10 000 for companies, a measure aimed at curbing informal sales and improving market transparency.
