Bruno Fernandes says he is sad and frustrated after Portugal's World Cup defeat to Spain
Portugal were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the round of 16 when Spain scored a stoppage‑time winner, 1‑0, through Mikel Merino. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes posted on X that he felt “sad, frustrated and disillusioned,” adding that the group of players had raised his expectations high because of their quality and the team they had built over the years. He thanked the players, coaching staff and Portuguese supporters for their effort.
Fernandes also hinted that the tactical approach of coach Roberto Martinez contributed to the loss; Martinez has since stepped down. The defeat ended Portugal’s hopes of a first World Cup title and marked the final tournament for Cristiano Ronaldo, who left with his head held high despite the outcome. Portugal entered the competition as one of the favourites, having shown strong performances in the group stage before the narrow knockout exit.
