Portuguese Air Force rescues passenger from ship near Terceira
The Portuguese Air Force conducted a medical rescue of a 76-year-old American passenger aboard the Dutch-flagged vessel Rotterdam. The passenger was suffering from severe abdominal pain while the ship was navigating approximately 400 nautical miles (741 kilometers) north of Terceira Island in the Azores.
The rescue operation was coordinated by the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre of Ponta Delgada (MRCC Delgada) following an alert received on Friday afternoon. An EH-101 helicopter from Squadron 752 was deployed on Saturday morning to perform the extraction after clinical evaluation by the Maritime Urgent Patient Orientation Centre (CODU-Mar).
Following the helicopter rescue, the passenger was transported to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island and transferred to a hospital via an ambulance from the Azores Regional Service for Civil Protection and Firefighters (SRPCBA). The operation involved multiple agencies, including the Portuguese Navy, RCC Lajes, and the Ponta Delgada Port Authority.
