Portuguese and Macau universities expand research cooperation

Portuguese and Macanese academic institutions are expanding scientific and technological cooperation through new joint research and educational initiatives.

The University of Coimbra and Macau Polytechnic University have inaugurated a Joint Research Laboratory in Digital Humanities and Applied Language Sciences. This strategic facility focuses on advanced research in digital communication, intercultural dimensions, and the computational processing of Portuguese and Chinese language variants. The laboratory will utilize Artificial Intelligence tools to facilitate advanced translation services and preserve historical and cultural heritage.

In a separate development, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) and the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) are working to launch joint programs in nanotechnology. Building on the existing Sino-Portuguese Joint Laboratory of Optoelectronics, the collaboration aims to facilitate student exchanges. Starting in the 2027/2028 academic year, MUST plans to send master's and doctoral students to UNL for joint supervision, while UNL explores hosting undergraduate students from MUST to foster internationalization and research development.
