Portuguese Army receives first Black Hawk helicopter

The first UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter of the Portuguese Army has arrived at the Tancos Military Aerodrome in Vila Nova da Barquinha. The aircraft was transported from Melbourne, Florida, via a Portuguese Air Force KC-390 plane.

The helicopter is currently undergoing the final stages of acceptance and certification before it begins flight operations. The Army has already qualified personnel in piloting and aeronautical maintenance, with further training underway for new staff to support the capability.

The acquisition program includes a total of four Black Hawk helicopters. The second aircraft is expected in the second quarter of 2027, the third in the fourth quarter of 2027, and the final unit in the first quarter of 2028. The Army's Support, Protection, and Evacuation Helicopter Unit (UHAPE) will be based in Tancos and will reach full operational capacity as the aircraft arrive and infrastructure adaptations are completed.
