Portuguese authorities and municipalities reject renewable energy projects
Several renewable energy initiatives in Portugal have faced significant opposition or rejection due to environmental and landscape concerns. The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) issued an unfavorable decision regarding a 21-hectare photovoltaic hybridization project at the Penedo Ruivo Wind Farm in Serra do Marão. Despite the project's potential for renewable energy production, the APA determined that the significant and non-minimizable negative impacts on environmental factors made it incompatible with the protection of the area, specifically citing its location within the Alvão/Marão Special Conservation Zone and the Serra da Aboboreira Regional Protected Landscape.
In a separate development, the municipalities of Sernancelhe, Moimenta da Beira, and Tabuaço have expressed formal opposition to the Vilar-Tabuaço Floating Photovoltaic and Hybrid Wind Project. This proposal involves installing floating solar panels on the Vilar reservoir. Local authorities argue that the infrastructure could cause damage to water resources, ecology, and biodiversity, while also severely impacting the region's visual identity and tourism potential. The municipalities maintain that the energy transition should not occur at the expense of local territories and populations.
