Portugal intercepts narcolancha in Tejo estuary, detaining 11 suspects

Portuguese authorities intercepted a high-speed vessel, described as a ‘narcolancha’, in the Tejo River estuary during a joint operation involving the Maritime Police, Navy, Air Force, and Judicial Police. The vessel, equipped with high-power engines, was reportedly used for rapid drug transport and logistics.

Eleven suspects were detained, including six Spanish nationals, four Guyanese citizens, and one Surinamese national. They are suspected of drug trafficking and providing logistical support to international criminal organizations. Authorities seized various items intended for maritime drug trafficking operations, including spare parts, communication equipment, food, and fuel.

The operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat maritime narcotics trafficking, which Portuguese Interior Minister Luís Neves has identified as a primary threat to national security. Data from 2025 indicates a rise in drug-related crimes and seizures in the country.
