Portuguese broadcasters RTP, SIC and TVI secure free‑to‑air World Cup coverage

Portugal’s public service broadcaster RTP, along with commercial generalists SIC and TVI, have concluded a joint agreement with FIFA to acquire the free‑to‑air rights to broadcast 20 matches of this year’s FIFA World Cup. The package includes every match involving the Portuguese national team, the opening game, both semi‑finals and the final, as well as a selection of other key fixtures.

The three operators will each air a specific set of games, a distribution to be announced shortly, marking an unprecedented partnership among Portugal’s major broadcasters to ensure unrestricted access for Portuguese viewers. The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July in the United States, Canada and Mexico. RTP sport director Miguel Barroso highlighted the deal as a “joint, determined response” protecting free access, while Impresa entertainment director Daniel Oliveira called it a “smart and responsible response” in a competitive market, and TVI general director José Eduardo Moniz stressed the commitment to bring the most important moments of the World Cup to all Portuguese households.
